Traditional 1-on-1 piano lessons can promote a feeling in children that is the very antithesis of learning – anxiety.

Kids want to please their teacher, and the traditional piano lesson model places a significant amount of pressure on the student to play the right notes, demonstrate that they’ve practiced, and more. As many recent studies have shown, anxiety and stress activate the body’s fight-or-flight mechanism. This limits the abilities of the prefrontal cortex, which in turn limits what your child can learn in lessons.

Your child will enjoy lessons in a high tech piano lab complete with headphones and professional digital pianos. We have teachers in the studio who walk our students through the lessons curriculum, demonstrate concepts, and answer questions throughout the lesson.

Students play skill level appropriate melody lines on the keyboard with MIDI backing tracks – this makes even the most rudimentary music fun and inspiring. Best of all, our assessments are done right in the teaching software. There’s no assessment in front of peers, and there isn’t pressure to perform perfectly in front of others. Your child will simply play their music on the digital piano, and our teaching platform will measure accuracy.

Does The Group Format Hold High Performers Back?

Absolutely not! As soon as your child passes an assessment at 80% accuracy or higher, they are able to progress to the next section. Once a student passes an entire level, they are placed with a group of peers at the same level.

What Concepts Will Your Child Learn?

The Piano Express Curriculum helps your children develop into well-rounded pianists and musicians.

Firstly, we teach great technique: this includes posture, hand position, how to play without tension, and more. This helps young pianists play without pain, and as they improve, they will be able to play with more speed and expressiveness.

We also teach our students how to read music and play by ear. Your child will learn to identify notes on the treble and bass clefs, and they will learn how to play with both hands at the same time. We even teach “sight reading,” which is the ability to read through a piece of music accurately on the piano the first time it is viewed. As far as ear training is concerned, students learn to identify intervals, play tunes without music, and more.

Music theory also comes into play in our lessons. The curriculum covers concepts like key signatures, time signatures, scale degrees, major and minor scales, and much more. We want our students to understand what is happening in the music they play.
